Layback

After disbanding the very fun reggae/rock band (and former Rocktorium clients) The Rudeness, several of the members weren’t quite ready to give up the course that the band had set. After adding several new, very talented members, these tunes are the next wave of gems from gifted writer/singer Jonny Safford and the crew.

Ted Stevens Band- Dead End Dragstrip

A great new record ready for release, Dead End Dragstrip was recorded in a just a few days, and during a hurricane that knocked out power for weeks, but mercifully spared an approximate 1/4 mile circle around the Rocktorium. It is always a lot of fun to work with Teddy and the boys, and this record was no exception. Proud to be a pioneer in the new genre of “Hurricane Rock”. Check them out all over Florida, and periodically, in Rhode Island.

Scotty Don’t – Scars

I’m not sure how I let this one slip by without posting it, but here is a single by Scotty Don’t, mixed here at the Rocktorium of Love this past fall. Always a fun band to work with. I’ll admit, my favorite part is the Sam the Sham style organ parts.
Enjoy, and find the band all over the country, and at Scottydont.com

MOGA

Here are a couple of teaser tracks from the band MOGA, recorded over the later part of the summer, and due to be released this winter. A very fun and versatile band with terrific tunes. The album also features some help from the lovely ladies of Sugar Honey Iced Tea, as well as trumpet by Doug Woolverton (Roomful of Blues), sax by Pat Downes (Badfish), and trombone by Ray Gennari.
Enjoy, and look for the rest of this great album soon.

Badfish- Live

Just in time to celebrate their 10th anniversary,  is a live recording of the Sublime tribute band, Badfish.  Recorded over 2 days during a tour in Florida in March, the mix utilizes a lot from the mics particularly placed to capture the audience.  The result puts the listener right in the crowd, and showcases the terrific energy that the band has live.  Look for them all over the country, and check out their original project, Scotty Don’t, featured in another blog, as well.

Scotty Don’t

Late summer sees the release of a new album by Scotty Don’t, the original project of the band Badfish. I’ve worked with the band since its inception, and am continually impressed not only with the talent of the members, but also their passion for exploring musical ideas.

This album consists of several new studio cuts as well as several live recordings. The new songs were recorded fully embracing today’s recording technology, and the ability to easily send tracks anywhere via the web. The demo versions of the tunes were written by Pat Downes in Florida, then fleshed out up here in Rhode Island.

After some pre-production work here, the album became a truly national project. Drums, bass, guitar, vocals and horns were all recorded at different places along the east coast, and then sent to Austin for mixdown. A little unusual, but the most efficient way to record a heavily touring band whose members live far from each other.

Look for this band all over the country at every Badfish show.

The Rudeness

Next out to press is a 13 song album by the Rudeness, a group that worked for years as most of M80, and now returns to its reggae/ska roots.

Great tunes, written chiefly by Jonny Safford, an incredibly prolific writer/ singer/ guitarist. The 5 piece band cut all rhythm parts for 13 tunes in one session, we then overdubbed vocals and horns. A few extra additions from the Rocktorium of Love bullpen (Mike Dansereau and Doug Woolverton on organ and trumpet, respectively, with a little trombone added by me) filled out this album perfectly.

A really great album arriving just at the heart of Summer. This band will be touring a lot to support this record, check them out at

Shacklehands

Just putting the final touches on a mix for Shacklehands, a twangy rock band from Wakefield, RI. This session was a little different, in that I didn’t record any of the original tracks, just a few overdubs later on. Most of the instruments and vocals were recorded in the basement of the group’s singer and songwriter, Gregg Figliozzi. As recording gear gets more and more affordable, these types of projects are becoming more common.

This album was a lot of fun to be part of. Terrific songs, and some really cool instrumentation choices; straight ahead rock lineup, with touches of lap steel, mandolin, and sitar. Putting these mixes together took a little longer than usual ( an engineer can do most of his EQ’ing before a note is recorded, through guitar/amp choices, drum tuning, and mostly, mic choice/placement) but it was a welcome challenge. Again, with songs this good, the job of the mix is to support the strength of the song, and to help it reach its full potential while more or less being unnoticed. A project I really enjoyed, and a band I hope to work with again.

Rumor has it that Gregg has nearly a second album’s worth of material ready to go. Look for this album very soon, and please go check this band out live, and check out their not-so-secret weapon, Amy.
